Training Course in Robotic Machining

The course will be organized over two full days (March, 18-19, 2026) and the venue for the course is Grimstad, Norway. The course is structured as a combination of basic theory, robot operation, and practical exercises. The practical exercises will cover the following applications; milling, plasma cutting and use of an arc welding robot station.

No previous robot skills or experience is required. There will be a maximum of 10 participants in each course. Each participant will get hands-on training with several industrial robots and applications.

The course will cover the following subjects:

  • Basic theory for using industrial robots, including the most important coordinate frames and transformations
  • Tool data and user frame calibration in practice
  • Use of offline robot simulation
  • Generation of toolpaths using CAD/CAM
  • Basic robot operation and safety
  • Practical experience with robotic milling
  • Practical experience with robotic plasma cutting
  • Use of a robotic welding cell

Day 1: From 12:00 to 19:00
Day 2: From 08:00 to 16:00

The course gives you real, practical, hands-on experience with industrial robots, not just theory. At the end you will get a course certificate.

The course will be given by Geir Hovland. He has worked as a robotics engineer, researcher and professor within industry, research and education since the mid 90s. For several years he was also the robotics expert of NFEA (Norwegian Association of Electric and Automatic Control). Additional internal and external resources will be involved in relation to practical exercises.
